What about this part?  What is the nginx equivalent of this?  Where is 
there documentation on this?

Meanwhile I'm going to have to resort to xdebug maybe, and/or I'm also 
getting my RHEL5 VM w/Apache into shape ... to also run via xdebug I 
guess...   incredible...   all for this one rewriterule. :(
