This is because nginx try dynamically resolve www.example.com without
resolver defined.

However, this way

        location / {
            proxy_pass  http://www.example.com/site/yahoo/;
        }

is better than

        location / {
            proxy_pass  http://www.example.com/site/yahoo/request_uri;
        }
