objs/autoconf.err has 
[code]checking for --with-ld-opt="-R /home/djeyewater/apps/GeoIP/lib -L
/home/djeyewater/apps/GeoIP/lib"

gcc: unrecognized option '-R'
/home/djeyewater/apps/GeoIP/lib: file not recognized: Is a directory
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status[/code]

The gcc and ld versions installed are:
gcc version 4.1.2 20080704 (Red Hat 4.1.2-48)
GNU ld version 2.17.50.0.6-14.el5 20061020
