Active connections increasing

On one of my nginx boxes currently running as a reverse proxy caching
server server (using proxy_cache) I am seeing the number of Active
Connections and Waiting connections increasing over time and never
decreasing. These increases go up in steps over time and reach 50k
connections before I am forced to restart the Nginx process.

nginx version: nginx/0.7.67
OS: Debian Lenny

Has anyone else seen this behavior or could help me explain it?
