problems: 1. too many open files 2. upstream timed out,

Поменял "ulimit -n на 16384" (was 2048), прописал worker_rlimit_nofile 10240
прошел час - ни одной ошибки в error logs

Видимо "Connection Timed Out" была наведенной проблеммой.
