$bytes_sent is never written before you finished downloading

nginx according to my configuration writes $bytes_sent to the log file. If i
was downloading a file within 5 hours, i would see it in the log after i
finished. How to know any information about $bytes_sent  before i finished?
For example every minute or every other chunk.
