patch to enable cross compilation

The above patch is compatible with the current configure interface. It allows
variable override for feature, sizeof and endianness detection.

For an example of how it can be used in a cross compilation environment, see

Hope this can be incorporated into the main distribution (so I don't have to
maintain it :-).
