SSL "bad write retry" errors in nginx error log

I'm seeing a lot of SSL "bad write retry" errors in my nginx logs (see
below).  I've tried tracking this down through the nginx and OpenSSL
code, but I'm at a loss for explaining why it's happening.

This is with nginx 0.5.31 and OpenSSL 0.9.7e on FreeBSD 6.2.

Any assistance (including temporary workarounds) appreciated.
