having problem with ./configure

[just starting]

hi all,

I tried to install nginx in a new machine and got the following error:

$ ./configure
checking for OS
 + Linux 2.6.9-22.ELsmp i686
checking for C compiler ... not found


After that i run
$yum install gcc*
which installed abt 17 packages.

Still getting same prob.

How to resolve this.
