nginx smtp & php?

Is it possible to tell php to use nginx's smtp module to send mail? If 
so, where online can I find information about such a configuration?

At the moment sendmail & qmail are causing us problems, so we'd like to 
cut them out of the loop entirely if possible and have just have php, 
mysql, and nginx on our server.
