mod_strip and fastcgi

I've compiled nginx with mod_strip, and added "strip on;" to my location 
block which handles *.php files. Doesn't seem to be stripping any 
whitespace though. Does mod_strip only work with static html files, or 
do I have to do something extra to make fastcgi responses strip properly?
