location ~ \.php$ does not work with proxy_pass breaks pretty permalinks

Here is an example:

http://www.nerdgrind.com/share-files-and-folders-and-printers-over-a-network/

The homepage loads normally at the address http://www.nerdgrind.com/, but anything else, for example http://www.nerdgrind.com/page/2/ or single article pages like the example above, won't load at all.
