Proxy pass, upstream and http/1.0

Hi,

It is correct that Nginx can/will only establish a 1.0 connection to an upstream application server? I can't see a way to make the proxy-pass honor 1.1 protocol. Am I looking in the wrong place in the docs or am I missing something fundamental? Is the use of proxy-pass and upstream the wrong approach to front-ending a web app server?
