zone_size vs max_size - what's the difference?

Hi,
    I'm wondering what's the difference between the zone_size and max_size
parameter in a proxy_cache_path directive like below.

*proxy_cache_path path [levels=number] keys_zone=zone_name:zone_size
[inactive=time] [max_size=size];*
