Newbie questions about nginx (moving from apache)

So with this setup, this works: 

http://mydomain.com:81/static/test.gif 

But when I try this: 

http://mydomain.com:81/static/test.gif 

It physically redirects to http://mydomain.com. 

How can I avoid this?
