Thanks to everyone that responded to my questions.  Nginx has a great 
community around it!

It has become clear that I need to learn more about the HTTP protocol.  I 
am starting with the O'Reilly book "HTTP The Definitive Guide". 

Does anyone have other recommended reading to help my understand how HTTP 
operates?
