Странная работа error_log

Имеем два тазика с фряхой и nginx.

user  www;
worker_processes  2;
error_log   /var/log/nginx/error.log;

pid        /var/run/nginx.pid;

events {
    worker_connections  10000;
    use kqueue;
}

http {
...
}

В общем nginx игнорирует error_log и при  service nginx reload
упорно начинает писать в  /var/log/nginx-error.log

Причем в это время в  /var/log/nginx/error.log  нормально пишутся ошибки
класса [error]

Как отучить nginx писать в /var/log/nginx-error.log ?
