gzip directives

Greetings all,
I'm new to the list, so I don't want to bog everything down with a lot of repeat questions.  I've been having a hard time finding documentation on the various gzip directives used in the configuration files, and posts on various web sites have netted nothing.  Could someone please direct me to some information on this?
