I thought nginx automatically tried another upstream (if you have
multiple...) - I could be wrong but it seemed like it to me and I
thought that was a neat feature...

If not, or if it does not properly, I would say that is definately a
good feature request (or bug to be fixed) and you may look into
HAproxy I think that might be one of its features too.
